∆ As Wendy and Danny enter the Overlook Maze for the first time, we see a map with a compass reference to the left hand side, with north angled to the left. However, if we match the map to the entrance, the compass is oriented in the opposite direction we would assume for a mountaintop resort in Colorado, which would naturally be built on the southern face of the mountain to catch as much sunlight as possible. Of course everything about the Overlook is in opposition to Nature.
∆ If we re-orient and superimpose the Maze Map onto a map of the Overlook Exterior, we find that Maze Map’s north points toward the road used by Wendy and Danny to exit the Overlook at the film’s end.
∆ So by the Maze Map’s compass direction, the camera is oriented north in the final shot we see of Wendy and Danny. The road sign then points north and east.
