∆ October 30th, 1977, the projected date of the “Closing Day” sequence in The Shining, was also the end of Daylight Savings Time that year. If it’s time to turn the clocks back an hour, we find with the clocks on the walls of the Overlook are getting ahead of themselves and winding themselves back, maybe more than just an hour. Displayed time runs backwards on the Torrence’s first day at the Overlook.
∆ The time reads 1:30 on the clock in upper screen right as Hallorann leads Wendy and Danny into the kitchen.
∆ Time reads 12:50 on the Kitchen wall clock in a scene less than two minutes of screen time later.
∆ The time reads 10:55 on the green hallway clock less than two minutes screen time later. So over the course of these three shots and less than four minutes screen time, time has reversed 2 hours, 35 minutes. Note this is the first time we see the green hallway behind the Lobby with its clock that has two faces, one for each direction in the hallway. Note also that the clock is stopped, its second hand frozen at ten seconds past.
∆ The time reads 5:25 when we last see the green hallway behind the Lobby as Jack chases after Danny. First note the color difference in the walls, as the Overlook gets less earthy and more cosmic. Then watch what happens when we rotate this still 180º.
∆ Now the time reads 10:55, the same time as when we first saw this two-faced clock. What happens if we flip the clocks in the other two scenes we see the green hallway behind the Lobby?
∆ The time reads 6:10 the second time we see the green hallway clock as Danny takes his third and final Big Wheel ride on the “Saturday” sequence (December 17th, 1977 by our projections.)
∆ Now flipped 180º and the clock reads 11:40.
∆ The time reads 11:40 on the wall clock screen right in the park service department in the scene immediately preceding Danny’s hallway ride.
∆ The time reads 5:15 the third time we see the green hallway as Danny runs back inside to hide after escaping through the bathroom window.
∆ Flipped 180º and the clock reads 11:45.
∆ The time reads 11:45 in the Lobby in the last clock display before Danny’s run through the green hallway. Note that Jack here is heading to the office to disconnect the radio that Wendy used to contact the parks service above. The first and last hallway clocks loop back on themselves and the second and third hallway clocks loop out to two scenes both concerned with the radio. Danny has his own radio, his ‘shining’ he uses to break the loop.
∆ We do see the hallway behind the Lobby one more time, however painted red and redecorated for Wendy’s final run through the Overlook.
