∆ For the establishing exteriors of The Overlook Hotel in The Shining, Stanley Kubrick used the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, Oregon, originally designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, visionary master of the Western Lodge.
∆ Gilbert Stanley Underwood also designed The Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite, California, inspiration for the interior of The Overlook, though interior decoration was originally conceived by husband-wife team of Arthur Pope and Phyllis Ackerman.
∆ Stephen King’s inspiration for The overlook came from The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado, built by Freelan O. Stanley, who along with his twin brother Francis, invented and manufactured steam-powered automobiles, and in a famous publicity stunt, drove one with his wife to the top of Mount Washington, New Hampshire.
